Mammoth Moments in Miniature provides quick updates on campus happenings. This week’s edition features the 10th annual LitFest, maple syrup boiling at Book & Plow, and a book talk by University of Göttingen Professor Srirupa Roy.

The Political Outsider: Talk by Professor Srirupa Roy

Srirupa Roy, professor and chair of state democracy at the Centre for Modern Indian Studies (CeMIS) at the University of Göttingen, discussed her new book “The Political Outsider: Indian Democracy and the Lineages of Populism” on Feb. 25 at the Lyceum. The book examines the eminence of “political outsiders” in post-colonial India, where democracy was first suspended and then restored, and connects this history to global political trajectories.

Peace-makers at a Time of War

Roots/Shorashim/Judor, a Palestinian/Israeli initiative for understanding and nonviolence based in the West Bank, will host an open discussion on Feb. 27 from 4:30 to 6 p.m. in the Cole Assembly Room. Roots’s co-founder Rabbi Hanan Schlesinger and Co-Director Khaled Abu Awwad will share their personal stories of working towards peace and transformation.

Faith, Nationalism, and the Future of Liberal Democracy

Dr. David Elcott, former Taub professor of practice in public service and leadership at New York University, will give a talk on his award-winning book “Faith, Nationalism, and the Future of Liberal Democracy” on Feb. 28 at 2 p.m. in Pruyne Lecture Hall. The book explores the relationship between religion and populist democracy across the globe and analyzes past examples where religion has nourished democracy.

Annual Literary Festival

This year’s LitFest will take place from February 27 to March 2, 2025. This year’s festival features award-winning author Teju Cole; Pulitzer Prize winner Brandon Som; Anthony Fauci, former director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and former Chief Medical Advisor to the president; and a panel on “American Fiction” (2023) with director Cord Jefferson, lead actor Jeffrey Wright ’87, and Percival Everett, author of the novel Erasure, which the film was based on. LitFest registration is open now. Events will be live-streamed for those without tickets.

Maple Syrup Boiling at Book & Plow

On March 1, students are invited to Book & Plow for the first maple syrup boiling of the season. Boiling will take place on Tuttle Hill from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with bagels, hot chocolate, and live music provided.
