Mammoth Moments in Miniature provides quick updates on campus happenings. This week’s edition includes the Undergraduate Awards Ceremony, a reading with Palestinian-American writer Sarah Aziza, and a talk on defunding science initiatives.
Undergraduate Awards Ceremony
On May 5, the college will host its annual Undergraduate Awards Ceremony, celebrating the achievements of outstanding freshmen, sophomores, and juniors in various areas of study. The event will be hosted by President Michael Elliott and Provost and Dean of Faculty Martha Umphrey and will be livestreamed. The ceremony lasts from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on the Valentine Quad, and regalia is not required.
A Reading and Conversation
As the final speaker for the Spring 2025 Creative Writing Series, Palestinian-American writer Sarah Aziza will discuss her first book, “The Hollow Half,” a hybrid work of memoir and oral history exploring key topics such as legacies of the diaspora, colonialism, and the American dream. A former Fulbright scholar in Jordan and recipient of numerous Pulitzer Center grants, Aziza has been featured by organizations including the New York Times, NPR, and the Washington Post. Her talk will be on Wednesday, April 30, from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Aliki Perroti & Seth Frank Lyceum.
The State of Science
In a timely discussion about the state of science in the midst of defunding initiatives across the country, Assistant Professor of Biology Mona Wu Orr and Assistant Professor of Chemistry Kendra Marcus will discuss the current state of scientific research, innovation, and public trust in science. The professors will share insights from their own fields in order to reflect on how science is shaping, and is being shaped, by our modern world. The event will be on Friday, May 2, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. in the Science Center room E208.
