Mammoth Moments in Miniature provides quick updates on campus happenings. This week’s edition includes a talk on The Electric New Deal, a talk on Russia's invasion of Ukraine, and a food science night.
Margot Lurie ’21: The Electric New Deal
The Department of Anthropology and Sociology and the Office of Fellowships will feature a talk by alum Margot Lurie ’21 on Wednesday in the Lyceum from 4 to 5 p.m. Lurie will discuss the enduring social, geopolitical, and environmental consequences of the American state’s increased involvement in the almost entirely privately controlled energy system through the “National Power Policy” during the New Deal.
Tikhon Dzyadko, "Russia Outside Russia: How Putin and His War Split the Biggest Country on Earth"
Today, journalist and Editor-in-Chief of TV Rain (Dozhd’) Tikhon Dzyadko will complete the second event in the Amherst College Russian Center’s series “The Day After Tomorrow: A Series on Futures for Eurasia” in Webster Hall room 202 from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Dzyadko will speak on the impact of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on Russian society, such as mass migration and changes in public debate due to military repression and propaganda. With Russian communities forming inside and outside of the country, Dzyadko will discuss the lasting consequences of the ongoing war.
Food Science Night
BIO-DEI will host Food Science Night on Monday, Nov. 17, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. in the Science Center lobby. The one-night event will involve everything related to food and STEM. Activities include: rice krispie biochemical modeling, liquid nitrogen ice cream, science-themed cookie decorating, pie-guessing competition via the mathematics and statistics department, holographic chocolate making, and elephant’s toothpaste.
