Merry Maple Tree Lighting

The Town of Amherst will hold its annual Merry Maple tree lighting on the Town Common Friday, Dec. 6, continuing a tradition that has been running for more than 50 years. The tree in the center of the common will be illuminated at 5 p.m., but the festivities will commence at 3 p.m. with an open house at the Amherst Fire Station. There will also be horse-drawn carriage rides and performances from the Amherst Regional Middle School Chorus and the UMass Minutemen Marching Band. The event is partially sponsored by the college.

The CHI seminar will meet for its second session on Friday from 1 to 2:20 p.m. in the Lyceum Seminar Room. The event will feature remarks from Leah Kim ’19, a current medical student at New York University who majored in Spanish and Biology while at Amherst, and Catherine Newman ’90, a best-selling author and Amherst English major whose research explores the struggle to be human through medical crisis.
