Mammoth Moments in Miniature: Sept. 12 to 19
Mammoth Moments in Miniature provides quick updates on notable campus news that has occurred since the last issue. In this week’s edition: the Strategic Learning Center opens, the Office of Student Activities changes its name, and a new safety app launches.
Strategic Learning Center
Established prior to this fall semester, the Strategic Learning Center aims to enhance individual skills and strategies related to time management, focus and productivity, reading and note-taking, test preparation, sleep and stress management, and other learning techniques, according to its website. The Strategic Learning Center is located on the second floor of Frost and is directed by Larissa Hopkins.
Office of Student Activities changed to Office of Student Engagement and Leadership
The former Office of Student Activities transitioned into the Office of Student Engagement and Leadership, aiming to better communicate their work in both event planning and cultivating student initiative. These changes coincide with broader staffing changes, including Rachel Kremer assuming the role of Director of Student Engagement and Leadership. For the coming semester, the Office hopes to promote student leadership through greater support, such as through training sessions, more materials, and a possible leadership retreat.
New Safety App
In an email to students on Thursday, Aug. 31, the Amherst College Police Department (ACPD) announced the Amherst College Safety app. The app’s features include the “Panic Button,” which allows students to instantly send their name and location to ACPD. Students may also activate “Friend Walk,” which allows students “a friend or colleague to follow your location on a map as you walk.” The “Social Escape” feature allows students to schedule a call to their phone, “providing you with a convenient excuse to leave an uncomfortable or dangerous situation,” according to the email. The safety app is available in the Apple App Store and on Google Play.
Amherst Student Interest Meeting
The Amherst Student Interest Meeting is Wednesday, Sept. 20 at 6 p.m. in Paino Lecture Hall (Room 107) in the Beneski Natural History Museum.
