Quick Questions: What Happened to TYPO?
Student Affairs provides the opportunity for students to dine with a faculty or staff member in town through the TYPO/TYSO program. Staff writer Neil Kapur ’25 explains how students can request this subsidized meal and the recent changes made to the program.
Contrary to information that appeared on the college’s website earlier this semester, Take Your Professor Out (TYPO) is still active — now with an expanded selection of restaurant options.
If you ever took a formal campus tour, you likely heard the student guide promote the college’s TYPO program, also known as TYSO for staff. The program allows a group of students to dine with a faculty or staff member at a restaurant in town on the college’s dime. Not only does the initiative promote community engagement by supporting local businesses, it also provides an opportunity for students to connect with faculty and staff outside of the classroom or an on-campus job, enriching the campus community.
After being placed on hiatus during the pandemic, TYPO/TYSO was relaunched in the Fall 2022 semester. Since the start of the Spring 2024 semester, however, the program’s website stated that meal registrations were temporarily closed. Moreover, the linked Google Form for requesting meals was not accepting responses.
Director of Communications for Student Affairs Dan Desrochers said the information on the website was incorrect (or what one may call a “typo” of sorts). The Office of Student Affairs has continued to offer TYPO/TYSO outings since last semester, though they had to be requested through email as the office was piloting a new payment program.
Following The Student’s inquiry about the TYPO/TYSO program, the website is now up-to-date with accurate information. Students can once again request TYPO outings through a Google Form. As before, each student can only host or attend one outing per semester.
Finally, students may appreciate a notable change to the program: an expanded selection of restaurants. In the semesters following the pandemic, TYPO/TYSO outings could only occur at a limited number of pre-approved restaurants. Now, students can host outings at any local restaurant that accepts reimbursement through the college’s new payment system.
As the semester inches to a close, and with TYPO/TYSO fully online, now might be the best time to treat that inspiring professor or superstar staff member to a meal in town!
