Humans of Amherst: Warmth
Inspired by Brandon Stanton’s “Humans of New York,” Staff Writer Hannah Feng ’28 launches the first installment of a new column, Humans of Amherst. This photo series debuts a collection of portraits highlighting the people of Amherst and the simple things that keep them warm.
It’s zero degrees on a Saturday morning. I don’t know where the squirrels have gone. But there are people outside, so there must be something else that keeps humans warm. In the first installment of Humans of Amherst, I asked people around town what that might be for them.
“Being together. Not being lonely.”
“I was just about to say that.”
Julian was taking down garlands and wreaths from the lampposts, closing out the holiday season and making room for spring decorations.
“I mean, warm clothes help but I guess the people stopping by always helps. People thanking us. And it’s usually the older people who will say that they like the wreaths on the lampposts and stuff. That definitely helps when people show recognition.”
“Positive thoughts, those get me through.”
“I mean, I don’t even think about the cold. When I think about the cold, I get cold. Today, like this, just don’t think about it.”

“Dedication.”
“Hand warmers, propane, and…uhh, what is that called…homeostasis!”
