“Violence and Vulnerability, Strangers and Settlers: Politics, Scholarship, and the Dualities of Jewish History with Ethan Katz ’02

Ethan Katz ’02, an associate professor in the department of history and the Center for Jewish Studies at the University of California, Berkeley, will be giving a talk on Thursday, March 27, from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. in the Aliki Perroti & Seth Frank Lyceum. The talk will take “a long view of the evolution of Jewish history in modern times,” outlining long-standing distinctions in Jewish studies while also examining Jews’ positions in modern times. The talk is open to the public.

Hack the Herd! AI in Sustainability Hackathon

This weekend, the Office of Sustainability, Ideas 2 Innovation Venture Accelerator, and AI in the Liberal Arts will be hosting the second annual Hackathon. This year’s theme will be sustainability, where students will be challenged to use AI-driven solutions to solve the college’s problems in Food Waste & Sustainable Dining, Waste Management & Recycling, Sustainable Transportation & Campus Mobility, and Climate Resilience & Carbon Footprint Tracking. The winning teams will have the chance to win up to $1,000 in prizes and giveaways.

Volunteer Opportunities Database

The Center for Community Engagement (CCE) has launched a database to keep students informed about one-time and ongoing volunteer opportunities in the Amherst area. The database includes opportunities to volunteer with local programs, festivals, food access initiatives, local youth, senior residents, and more. Students must be logged in with an amherst.edu email to view the database.
