Mammoth Moments in Miniature: Oct. 1 to Oct. 7
Mammoth Moments in Miniature provides quick updates on campus happenings. This week’s edition includes a professor-led talk on virginity, a kite-making workshop, the opening reception of a national sexual violence awareness project, and staff shout-outs.
What’s “Virginity” Got to Do with “Sovereignty”?
Andrew Canessa, professor of anthropology at the University of Essex, is visiting campus to talk to students about the idea of virginity and the figure of the Virgin Mary. The talk will also explore why virginity is important in many cultures but insignificant in others, as well as why it is so important that the Virgin Mary be a virgin. Canessa’s talk will be on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. in Paino Lecture Hall.
Kite-Making Workshop with Hai-Wen Lin
Guided by visiting artist Hai-Wen Lin, participants will be able to design and build their own kites. Lin’s work explores constructions of their body and the attunement of oneself to the environment, often moving through metaphor, etymology, sunlight, wind, and the way time passes perfectly when you are out walking on a beautiful day. After the workshop, students will test out their kite artworks at Book & Plow Farm.
The Clothesline Project Opening Reception
The Five Colleges Clothesline Project, presented by Health & Wellbeing Education, is having its opening reception on Monday from 3 to 6 p.m. The project is part of a national project to break the silence around sexual violence by providing space for survivors and loved ones of survivors to create t-shirts that give a space to share personal experiences. Shirts are hung shoulder to shoulder on a clothesline for public viewing, healing, and solidarity to survivors.
Amherst College Staff Shout-Out
