Strong start bodes well for track

Following Garrahan in the 5000m at Trinity were junior Carter Hamill, senior co-captain Aly Venti and sophomore Margaret Davis, who finished second, sixth and eighth, respectively. Hamill and Garrahan’s times qualified both provisionally for the NCAAs. In addition, the women sent two women to race in the 5000m, one of whom, junior Carter Hamill, returned to campus with her second national title. Hamill once again led the team with her exceptional performance in the 5000m race, taking first place, setting a new site record time of 16:46.63 and earning All-American honors for her third year in a row. Tri-captain Aly Venti ’04 led the women on Friday at the Valentine Classic at Boston University, placing ninth in the 5000m run and qualifying for the NCAA Championships. The individual highlight of the women’s meet came from first-year harrier Shauneen Garrahan, who qualified provisionally for the NCAA Championships with a spectacular second-place finish in the 1500m. Kristin Quinn ’07 First-year Quinn received All-Tournament honors at the Wesleyan Invitational this past weekend. In the course of the four-match volleyball tournament, in which Amherst finished 4-1, outside hitter Quinn tallied a team-leading 47 kills and 33 blocks. So far in her rookie year, Quinn has been a strong offensive as well as defensive threat for the Firedogs, as they continue to dominate with a 16-3 record so far. Sean Jules ’07 At the Williams-hosted NESCAC Championship Tournament this Saturday, rookie Jules led the men’s golf team to a second-place finish, just one point behind Hamilton College, the winning squad. Jules finished in third-place overall with a score of 76, good for him to secure First-Team All-NESCAC Honors, along with teammate junior Mike Valentine. Mike Page ’05 At the UMass-Dartmouth Invitational this past weekend, junior co-captain Mike Page led the men’s cross country team to their first-place finish. Page beat the heat to place fourth overall with his 25:40 finish, just one second ahead of fellow co-captain John Stanton-Geddes ’04. Page’s consistent efforts have helped the Jeffs win the first two meets of the season. He finished second at the Amherst Invitational on Sept. 6. Sean Lynch ’06 Lynch, the freshman goaltender for the men’s hockey team, was named NESCAC Men’s Hockey Co-Player of the Week due to the outstanding defense he provided for the Lord Jeffs this past weekend. During Friday’s Little III Championship-winning game against archrival Williams College, Lynch saved 27 of 30 shots. The day started for the women with Helen Dole ’04 finishing an impressive 12th in the pentathlon. One of the highlights of the day was senior Rebecca Woo’s 1000m race. Their last event was held in Middletown, Conn. at the Wesleyan Invitational. The women did exceptionally well, winning four events. Kate Hamill ’03 took first in the 800m, Alyson Venti ’04 won the 1000m, Carter Hamill ’05 won the 1500 and the 4 x 800m relay team notched first. Laurel Kilgour ’03 grabbed second in the 600m. The women’s team, led by Captain Jaime Ratner ’02, expects to attend bigger tournaments this season, including the Massachussetts State Championships and the Northeast Intercollegiate Championships.
