Mammoth Moments in Miniature provides quick updates on campus happenings. This week’s edition includes the annual City Streets Festival, the college’s signing of a joint statement condemning Trump, and a lecture on “Education and the World.”

City Streets Festival

The college will be holding its annual City Streets Festival this Sunday on the Val Quad from 5 to 8 p.m. The festival, centered around celebrating international heritage and culture, will feature live music, outdoor games, and food trucks with cuisine from around the world.

President Elliott Signs Joint Statement Condemning Trump Overreach

On Tuesday, over 220 college leaders signed a joint statement against “unprecedented government overreach,” shortly after Harvard University sued the Trump administration for freezing billions of its funds. The statement, titled “A Call for Constructive Engagement,” warned against “coercive use of public research funding” and “undue government intrusion” in higher education. Leaders of the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, Smith College, Mount Holyoke College, and Hampshire College have also signed the statement.

“Education and the World” Lecture

Sharon Marcus, Orlando Harriman Professor of English and Comparative Literature at Columbia University, will deliver a talk on April 29 about colleges’ ability to transform one’s experience of the world. The aim of the lecture is to provide first-year students with examples of how college education fosters a sense of “loving immersion” in a subject of study. The event will take place in the Cole Assembly Room from 7 to 8 p.m.
